Notes: Warmup gig, which was also a benefit show for St. Basil's (a homeless shelter). The band surprised everyone with a very interesting set list for this show, which included two rarely performed cuts from VOLUME 4 (“Under The Sun” and “Cornucopia”) and the live debut of a brand new track called “Scary Dreams”, which has still not been recorded by the band.
5/26/01 The National Bowl Milton Keynes Intro-Sabbath Medley, N.I.B., Snowblind, Under The Sun, Fairies Wear Boots, Scary Dreams, Iron Man, Into The Void, The Wizard, Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Children Of The Grave AUD/SB A 23-minute soundboard recording from this show is in circulation, as well as a complete audience tape. “Fairies Wear Boots” was dropped from the set list after this show.
6/8/01 Tweeter Center (a.k.a. New World Music Theater) Tinley Park Intro-Sabbath Medley, N.I.B., Snowblind, Scary Dreams, War Pigs, Iron Man, Into The Void, The Wizard, Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Children Of The Grave AUD CD-R’s:

6/9/01 Alpine Valley Music Theater East Troy Intro-Sabbath Medley, N.I.B., Snowblind, Scary Dreams, War Pigs, Iron Man, Into The Void, The Wizard, Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Children Of The Grave [A 2nd incomplete source tape cuts off during "Iron Man"] AUD There are at least 2 known source tapes, 1 being from DAT. One song ("The Wizard") from the official OZZFEST 2001 - THE SECOND MILLENIUM release may have been from this show.
6/12/01 Verizon Music Amphitheater Noblesville N.I.B. <5:33>, Snowblind <7:33>, Scary Dreams <6:38>, War Pigs<8:23>, Iron Man <8:37>, Into The Void <7:03>, The Wizard <4:42>, Black Sabbath <8:09>, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath [teaser] -> Paranoid [includes Intermission] <7:11>, E: Children Of The Grave <6:34> AUD Very good audience tape that is clear and undamaged, but recorded a good distance from the stage. The band is a bit shaky on many numbers, not sounding as forceful and confident as they would their best nights. Sabbath but still manages to create a great vibe at this Indiana venue in 2001. The show actually gets better and better as the evening progresses.

The source tape that I have doesn't include the usual "Sabbath Medley" introduction, but fades in with Ozzy working the crowd in a raspy voice - "Are you ready?? Are you fucking ready??!!" The band starts into "N.I.B." and Ozzy is completely out of key for the first few lines. He quickly adjusts his pitch for the rest of the song, but still sounds a little hoarse. The soundman dials up a bit of delay and even Geoff adds some backup to help him out, but none of this really helps. It's often difficult to predict how Ozzy will fare from just the opening number, because it sometimes takes him a few songs to get his pipes in order. Or at least functioning well!

To compensate for his limited range, Ozzy works the crowd hard. Even on a bad night, he'll still give the fans a raucous workout. Unfortunately for us though, the audio portion shows in just barely squeaking by on "Snowblind", which is always something of a challenge for him. Geoff's keyboard arrangements sound glorious here. At the close of "Snowblind", Ozzy introduces the band, taking time as always to introduce "MR. BILL WARD!" several times!

One of the reasons I made a point to review this show was to hear this rendition of "Scary Dreams". My friend James Clarke has a compilation of the various versions of this song that were performed during the 2001 tour and cited this gig for having the best one. Sure, it's a good version, but I'll still be a little disappointed if this is the definitive version. I love the vintage sound of this song, which almost sounds like Black Sabbath covering themselves - if that is even possible. Ozzy starts gaining a little strength during this one.

Ozzy trades off with the audience during the opening verses of "War Pigs" and keeps working 'em during Tony's solo. "War Pigs" has its wobbly moments (mainly the drums and vocals), but the audience interaction redeems them. But like a mad drill sergeant, Ozzy continues to scream such trademark lines as "I CAN'T FUCKIN' HEAR YOU!!!" at the audience during "Iron Man". "Iron Man" succeeds due to hearty crowd participation and turns out to be one of the highlights for the Nobleville 2001 show. "Into The Void" is definitely a step in the right direction. And how can you not smile when you here Sabbath play "The Wizard"? The harmonica bits are even pretty faithful to the original.

But all is truly well in Noblesville when the Sabs tear into their namesake - "Black Sabbath". Ozzy is well oiled by now and singing nice and smooth on this old classic. At the end of this song, Ozzy asks the crowd if they should come back next year. "The crazier you go, the longer we'll play", he promises at the start of "Paranoid", which begins with a short tease from the band - the beginning riff of "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath"! Don't we wish! The evening closes with the headbanging war horse, "Children Of The Grave". There are more signs of wear and tear in Ozzy's voice, but he's reached the finish line for this show. Ozzy lectures the crowd on drinking and driving and some firecrackers explode as the band begins to leave the stage.

Also - one track ("The Wizard") from the official OZZFEST 2001 - THE SECOND MILLENIUM CD was recorded at either this show or East Troy, WI 6/9/2001.
6/16/01 Float Rite Park Somerset Intro-Sabbath Medley <2:41>, N.I.B. <5:32>, Snowblind [cut at very end] <6:28>, Scary Dreams [1 minute cut in middle] <5:56>, War Pigs [about 3 small cuts] <8:12>, Band Introductions <0:51>, Iron Man <9:23>, Into The Void <7:17>, The Wizard <4:50>, Black Sabbath <10:06>, Paranoid <7:18>, Children Of The Grave <4:53>, Ozzy says “Farewell” <1:16>, Outro-Robin Hood <0:50> AUD Mostly complete audience recording with various small cuts throughout the show. The most annoying of these cuts occurs during the middle of “Scary Dreams”, during the middle section where Tony plays a different dirge type riff. I’d rate the quality as ‘Good’, due to thin sounding EQ. There isn’t much bass at all on this recording , but at least there’s enough high end for decent clarity. Also, there’s some occasional static noise that creeps in, as though the show were recorded with either a wireless unit or from a television monitor. Ozzy and Tony can be heard quite well, but Bill and Geezer are a bit more buried in this mix. Geoff’s keyboards come in especially loud during the coda for “Snowblind”, nearly drowning out Iommi’s outro solo! Not one of the better sounding audience tapes from 2001, but decent overall.

Performance-wise, Ozzy is working the crowd well with his trademark “Let me see your hands!” routines and an overly emphatic band introduction. He obviously relishes enjoys putting the spotlight on Bill, as he repeatedly shouts out “Mr. Bill Ward!!” about 6-10 times, but only acknowledges Tony and Geezer once. The Ozzman is a little shaky on “Snowblind”, but somehow manages to stay afloat. Good show in front of a responsive crowd, but not one that sticks out amidst the numerous 2001 tapes.

I’m seeing this one showcased as a “rare trade only” show on some trader lists, so this one is still not in wide circulation. In fact, I didn’t even have the set list until I transcribed it for myself! But other than the fact that this is a rarer item, it’s not really all that special. Just the fact that “Scary Dreams” is incomplete here would tend to make me choose another 2001 show instead. Save this for a trade when you have most everything else that is “very good” quality or better!
