There is also an audience film in circulation for this show. Ozzy’s unstable vocals make for a shaky overall performance in Wantagh. More on this in my review below. Source #1 is a mostly excellent stereo audience recording of complete show. Running time is just over 72 minutes. The recording itself is a well balanced digital stereo recording. We can hear each member of Sabbath very distinctly, even Geezer! There are a few spots where the volume drops abruptly, as if a limiter has kicked in. But these lulls are brief and not long enough to seriously mar this recording. During the introduction (“Sabbath Medley”), a lot of chatter can be heard around the taper. When the controversial projection screen visuals are shown behind “War Pigs”, the taper comments “Adolf & Bush – same shit”. Source #2 is a 'good' audience recording with some distortion around the edges. The tape starts during the middle of the intro, with no "Sabbath Medley". Source #3 is the audio track from the audience film. The Wantagh show begins with an awkward rendition of “War Pigs”. Ozzy begins the song a bit off-key and this is accentuated by the echo delay effects that were applied to his voice. Bill also stumbles a bit on his timing during a few sections. The band locks into gear during “N.I.B.”, but Ozzy gradually slips out of key again. Before a fair rendition of “Fairies Wear Boots”, Ozzy asks the audience “Is it still raining?” Although he rushes into the 1st verse of “Into The Void”, it is the first song that both he and the band get into sync. “ITV” is definitely a highlight during an otherwise wobbly show. Ozzy finds himself in trouble again with “Sweet Leaf”. Even with the rest of the band playing completely on the money, Ozzy sounds whiny and pitiful as he squeaks this song out only be sheer force of will. After hearing this rendition, it is safe to say that they made a good call by dropping this song from the set list for a while. (“”Sweet Leaf” is resurrected at least once more in Clarkston on 8/17/04) During his band introductions, Ozzy spares Bill Ward his usually melodramatic and overwrought presentation to the audience. Despite a few awkward vocal phrasings from Ozzy, Sabbath turn in a good rendition of “Black Sabbath”. Adam Wakeman makes his first appearance during “Snowblind”, adding his keyboards to climax of the song. Sadly, Ozzy is in trouble once again as he strains his way through the song. In a possible tactic to save face, Ozzy begins to joke it up a bit during “Iron Man”. He doesn’t even bother enunciating half of the 2nd verse! On the other hand, Iommi isn’t fooling around when he plays a blinder of a solo during “IM”. The band sounds solid during “Children Of The Grave” despite Ozzy’s ever wobbling pitch control. Before their closing encore, Ozzy acknowledges the rainy weather with his own rendition of “Singing In The Rain”. The show is closed with a workable “Paranoid”

There is a slight sound change during "War Pigs" as the microphone was turned down. RIDER, who taped the show explained that "Judas Priest was a little quieter so the beginning of Sabbath is a little loud and slightly distorted." Rider is a little hard on himself as this recording deserves a solid EX in my book! [Editor’s note – I’ll 2nd that one, Guillaume. This is a very clear and well recorded show, certainly deserving of better than a VG rating.] Every instrument can be clearly heard with the exception of the keyboards, which must have been turned too low in the mix. That's too bad because I would have liked to hear how Adam Wakeman sounded. This was the fourth show of the "Ozzfest 2004" tour. For some reason, "Sweet Leaf" was dropped from the setlist from this show onwards. The recording begins with Ozzy shouting at the crowd before the standard intro tapes rolled. He is telling them that they have to go “crazier than ever”. As the audience warms up to Ozzy’s playfulness, they begin to chant "Ozzy ! Ozzy !" and the intro medley then begins. It is the same medley that was used for their REUNION tour. But it is "Supertzar" that gives us the feeling of seeing a classic Sabbath show. All right, nothing new here, - no surprises either. The set list only concentrates on the first four albums (up through VOLUME IV). But just give these guys a listen! Ozzy's voice is better than it has been in years. And here is the man knows how to work the crowd! Bill Ward sounds as if he’s about to tear his drum kit apart with his thrashing. Geezer Butler provides deep bass lines in a powerful and jazzy style. Tony Iommi's playing is just purely amazing and heavy as hell! The best aspect of this show is that they don't just play their "Greatest Hits" set list straight from the book. They play around with the songs a bit, re-inventing them and delivering brilliantly heavy new readings of their old classics. The highlight for me was hearing them play the best live rendition of "Fairies Wear Boots" I've heard in a very long time. More important, they sound like they are having tremendous fun, and isn't that what it's all about?” [Editor’s note: Amen, Guillaume!!! This is exactly how I felt about seeing Black Sabbath in Nashville. Granted, this set list is no stretch for them, but the chemistry was there – for the band AND the audience. It’s all about the wonderful ritual of seeing Black Sabbath live!]

Source #1: Very good to excellent recording of the complete show, done by Matt M. Source #2: Fair to good quality recording of complete show. It was recorded by Jayce R. with a MiniDisc recorder in Mono mode. I penalized the quality rating of this source for the clipping, distortions and noises that occur throughout the recording. Listenable, but not nearly as enjoyable as Source #1. Jayce R: "I taped the Sabbath show at the White River Amphitheatre. It came out okay, with some bass distortion and mic movement in places. Overall, it came out okay. I recorded it with a stereo microphone ->battery box-> Sony MZ-R700 (Mini Disc). I accidentally left the recorder in Mono mode, so the recording is in Mono. Ozzy's voice sounds great at the beginning of the show, but the mix sounds weird, kinda low. It gets better after "N.I.B." Source #3: Recorded by KS with a Sharp MS722 Minidisc with Dynamic Audio Cardiods with a DA-120F Battery Box. Confirmed by Lars Bernstroem. Both are very good to excellent digital audience recordings, but each has its own advantages. Source #1 is a very good to excellent audience recording of complete show. It sounds like it was recorded a bit closer to the PA than source #1, so the music has greater presence here. The EQ is a bit lop-sided, with a strong (but somewhat brassy) high frequency response, but a weak bass end. There is some slight distortion, but only enough to degrade the quality slightly. The running time is a generous 79:57, due to the inclusion of the pre-show FM radio excerpts AND the fact that the taper kept recording once the show had finished. Turo Taimen: "I don't know what the Radio DJ is talking about but he does mention something about the Wizard of Ozzfest or something like that. In all, this is an A quality audience recording in my opinion. I was dissappointed to hear about the set list for this Ozzfest again. Same old same old. When I first heard about the fact that Sabbath was going to play, I hoped for a surprise song - "Supernaut" maybe? But no, it was just the same numbers that were played on the 2001 and not even "Scary Dreams". Damn!" "Ozzy is in pretty good shape though and that's a good thing! But during "Into The Void", he screws up on the lyrics of the middle part and his voice cracks a bit on the higher notes, but nothing too bad..." Source #2 is also a very good to nearly excellent recording (B+). The high end response isn't as strong as version #1 and the taper sounds a bit further from the stage. On the positive side, the bass response is much richer and the overall recording is much cleaner, as it doesn't have the distortions that are present in source #1.The taper used the following equipment scheme: Schoeps MK4s > Nbox > SBM-1 > TCD-D100. The running time is 68:42. Which version is better? This could easily be a toss-up, since both recordings are nearly excellent due to their clarity. But each is also flawed in some minor way. I would personally lean towards Source #1, but this may because my ears prefer a little extra treble for clarity. I also like the extras and the fact that source #1 doesn't sound quite as distant. By the time Sabbath came on security had been running around for over 90 minutes putting out the fires. So by the time Sabbath hit the stage they where getting really slow responding to the fires. Review of show by taper from 8/29/04 David Gargalino: “After Judas Priest I couldn’t believe that one more band had to play. I had been at DTE for almost 12 hours and things weren’t going to end any time soon which was perfectly fine with me. The band that I thought i had seen the last of back in 2001 was about to go on. The Almighty Black Sabbath. I think it was the perfect time for Sabbath to come back into the realm of things. It’s their 35th anniversary as a band and I think Ozzy wanted to be with his closest friends. Black Sabbath for Ozzy was like being back home. It was the most comfortable position he could be in considering what had happen to him 8 months ago. It was an extra treat that all the members were on board......So anyways, darkness had set in over the sunny skies of a beautiful Tuesday afternoon.” ”The stage was instantly transformed and the drapes were down. The camera crew was being set up and a Black Sabbath promo was showing on the screens. Excitement was at an all time high, the pioneer metal masters were on their way. Finally, everyone hears the classic Ozzy voice over the PA. "Oye Oye Oye, I Cant Fucking Hear You!!!" Behind the curtain you can see Iommi and Geezer coming from stage left and stage right. Bill Ward takes position behind his drum set. Then the silhouette of Ozzy came before the curtain and the crowd went crazy. I was 6 feet from the action and I never felt so good to see Black Sabbath. “War Pigs” started and the stage crew ran over and removed the curtain and then was reveled BLACK FUCKING SABBATH. The one thing that caught me eye was how smaller and intimate the stage had become. Bill’s drum riser was in the middle, while Geezer's Ampeg amps were stacked together in a small area and Iommi's trademark wall of amps was trimmed down to eight or so cabs.” ”This was in stark contrast to the past tours. That was OK with me. It seemed all the more fitting to see all the guys close together. Bill has grown out his hair again this time round compared to the short army crew cut he had in 2001. He was still a little over weight but he looked a lot healthier. Iommi had not changed he still was equipment with his red Gibson SG and that trademark mustache and glasses. Geezer had not changed one bit either but he sported a new bass (looks like a fender precision bass body with a Larkin neck). But the one person that surprised me the most was Ozzy Osbourne. He looked like the healthiest one and the happiest. This night he ditched the sunglasses, the hanging jewelry, the black sweatshirt (as i had seen previously at Ozzfest 2001 and 2003). He was wearing a silk Black shirt with blue sleeves. His previous red highlights were gone and he sported his normal hair color. Ozzy looked like he just came out of the mid-seventies. I don't think he has looked better than he did tonight. He seemed to have a hell of of time and truly enjoyed every minute. When they started War Pigs, I was instantly blown away by the shear power of Geezer's amp. Since i was standing right in front of him, his amps over powered the other band members. So I got to appreciate the amazing bass work of Geezer. But altogether the band never sounded so good. The set list was quick but to the point. Yeah i wish they could have expanded on the set list especially leaving out the usual War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man songs. I miss The Wizard but It was great hearing Fairies Wear Boots and hearing the intro to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. But all in all, I took whatever was given all in. Who's cares what they played just to witness Black Sabbath again was all that I cared. Ozzy had his Coffee and Tea mugs on Bill's drum riser. Oz was great and it was nice to see him explain how the odds were against him but he was determined to prove the doctors wrong. And indeed he did and he gave the doctors a big time "Fuck You." Zakk was right about Ozzy, he's a soldier. I hope the get together and make an album, if not at least another tour. If it indeed becomes the last Ozzfest next year I think it would be fitting to have Black Sabbath close it out. But i treasured every moment of seeing Black Sabbath and appreciated what they had done for rock n' roll. I also got what I wish for; a Black Sabbath pick from Geezer. It was a bittersweet moment at the end because it was all over. The last 7 months of anticipating this moment had gone by quick, but as soon as it ended, me and my friend Casey turned to each other and said "We are doing this all over again!!!" Tapers notes: Nick J (Source #1).: "Just wanted to drop you a line with some info on Ozzfest 08-21-2004 in Tinley Park, IL. I taped the show; thought you may want to add my source info to the listing. I am into trading and I know its nice to have source info for shows. The show was recorded with a Sony MZ-R900 MD recorder, Core Sound Binaural microphones, and Bass Roll Off filter. My version comes in at 71:06 over 10 tracks. Average quality, nothing special." "As for the show itself, I was pleasantly surprised by the band's performance. I was a bit worried after Ozzy's accident and his less-than-spectacular Ozzfest 2003 performances that he might not sound very good. I thought he sounded great and was very lively." Kip B. (Source #2): “Just noticed Nick J's comments on the Tinley Park 8/21/04 show. There was also a mention of two versions of this being available, and I think the other one mentioned is the one I recorded. I managed to sneak in an Aiwa digital voice recorder and recorded the show with it. The sound isn't very good but it's passable. Believe me, I have heard worse. I have only traded it to one other trader. I don’t know whether he has circulated this or not.” “I also have a copy of 8/21/04 that is different from mine, and it has some recurring static during "Iron Man". This was the show that featured Rob Halford on lead vocals, replacing Ozzy at the last moment due to his bronchitis. The band dropped “Snowblind” from the set list for the Camden show. It is said that Halford performed to a very mixed reception from the Camden audience, most of which were either disappointed or angry about Ozzy’s no show. So far, there are TWO known recordings of this show, but neither one has been circulated yet. Source #1 is a microcassette recording, which also includes Bill Ward's pre-show apology. Three confirmed audience sources, but there are likely more. There is also an audience film in circulation for this show. Ozzy’s unstable vocals make for a shaky overall performance in Wantagh. More on this in my review below.

Source #1 is a mostly excellent stereo audience recording of complete show. Running time is just over 72 minutes. The recording itself is a well balanced digital stereo recording. We can hear each member of Sabbath very distinctly, even Geezer! There are a few spots where the volume drops abruptly, as if a limiter has kicked in. But these lulls are brief and not long enough to seriously mar this recording.

During the introduction (“Sabbath Medley”), a lot of chatter can be heard around the taper. When the controversial projection screen visuals are shown behind “War Pigs”, the taper comments “Adolf & Bush – same shit”.

Source #2 is a 'good' audience recording with some distortion around the edges. The tape starts during the middle of the intro, with no "Sabbath Medley".

Source #3 is the audio track from the audience film.

The Wantagh show begins with an awkward rendition of “War Pigs”. Ozzy begins the song a bit off-key and this is accentuated by the echo delay effects that were applied to his voice. Bill also stumbles a bit on his timing during a few sections. The band locks into gear during “N.I.B.”, but Ozzy gradually slips out of key again.

Before a fair rendition of “Fairies Wear Boots”, Ozzy asks the audience “Is it still raining?” Although he rushes into the 1st verse of “Into The Void”, it is the first song that both he and the band get into sync. “ITV” is definitely a highlight during an otherwise wobbly show.

Ozzy finds himself in trouble again with “Sweet Leaf”. Even with the rest of the band playing completely on the money, Ozzy sounds whiny and pitiful as he squeaks this song out only be sheer force of will. After hearing this rendition, it is safe to say that they made a good call by dropping this song from the set list for a while. (“”Sweet Leaf” is resurrected at least once more in Clarkston on 8/17/04)

During his band introductions, Ozzy spares Bill Ward his usually melodramatic and overwrought presentation to the audience. Despite a few awkward vocal phrasings from Ozzy, Sabbath turn in a good rendition of “Black Sabbath”. Adam Wakeman makes his first appearance during “Snowblind”, adding his keyboards to climax of the song. Sadly, Ozzy is in trouble once again as he strains his way through the song.

In a possible tactic to save face, Ozzy begins to joke it up a bit during “Iron Man”. He doesn’t even bother enunciating half of the 2nd verse! On the other hand, Iommi isn’t fooling around when he plays a blinder of a solo during “IM”. The band sounds solid during “Children Of The Grave” despite Ozzy’s ever wobbling pitch control.

Before their closing encore, Ozzy acknowledges the rainy weather with his own rendition of “Singing In The Rain”. The show is closed with a workable “Paranoid”

Review by Guillaume Roos (8/3/2004): Excellent audience recording - newly surfaced on August 2nd, 2004 via the Bit Torrent networks. There is a slight sound change during "War Pigs" as the microphone was turned down. RIDER, who taped the show explained that "Judas Priest was a little quieter so the beginning of Sabbath is a little loud and slightly distorted." Rider is a little hard on himself as this recording deserves a solid EX in my book! [Editor’s note – I’ll 2nd that one, Guillaume. This is a very clear and well recorded show, certainly deserving of better than a VG rating.]

Every instrument can be clearly heard with the exception of the keyboards, which must have been turned too low in the mix. That's too bad because I would have liked to hear how Adam Wakeman sounded.

This was the fourth show of the "Ozzfest 2004" tour. For some reason, "Sweet Leaf" was dropped from the setlist from this show onwards.

The recording begins with Ozzy shouting at the crowd before the standard intro tapes rolled. He is telling them that they have to go “crazier than ever”. As the audience warms up to Ozzy’s playfulness, they begin to chant "Ozzy ! Ozzy !" and the intro medley then begins. It is the same medley that was used for their REUNION tour. But it is "Supertzar" that gives us the feeling of seeing a classic Sabbath show.

All right, nothing new here, - no surprises either. The set list only concentrates on the first four albums (up through VOLUME IV). But just give these guys a listen! Ozzy's voice is better than it has been in years. And here is the man knows how to work the crowd! Bill Ward sounds as if he’s about to tear his drum kit apart with his thrashing. Geezer Butler provides deep bass lines in a powerful and jazzy style. Tony Iommi's playing is just purely amazing and heavy as hell!

The best aspect of this show is that they don't just play their "Greatest Hits" set list straight from the book. They play around with the songs a bit, re-inventing them and delivering brilliantly heavy new readings of their old classics. The highlight for me was hearing them play the best live rendition of "Fairies Wear Boots" I've heard in a very long time. More important, they sound like they are having tremendous fun, and isn't that what it's all about?”

[Editor’s note: Amen, Guillaume!!! This is exactly how I felt about seeing Black Sabbath in Nashville. Granted, this set list is no stretch for them, but the chemistry was there – for the band AND the audience. It’s all about the wonderful ritual of seeing Black Sabbath live!]

Source #2: Fair to good quality recording of complete show. It was recorded by Jayce R. with a MiniDisc recorder in Mono mode. I penalized the quality rating of this source for the clipping, distortions and noises that occur throughout the recording. Listenable, but not nearly as enjoyable as Source #1.

Jayce R: "I taped the Sabbath show at the White River Amphitheatre. It came out okay, with some bass distortion and mic movement in places. Overall, it came out okay. I recorded it with a stereo microphone ->battery box-> Sony MZ-R700 (Mini Disc). I accidentally left the recorder in Mono mode, so the recording is in Mono. Ozzy's voice sounds great at the beginning of the show, but the mix sounds weird, kinda low. It gets better after "N.I.B."

There are two known audience sources for this show. Both are very good to excellent digital audience recordings, but each has its own advantages.

Source #1 is a very good to excellent audience recording of complete show. It sounds like it was recorded a bit closer to the PA than source #1, so the music has greater presence here. The EQ is a bit lop-sided, with a strong (but somewhat brassy) high frequency response, but a weak bass end. There is some slight distortion, but only enough to degrade the quality slightly.

The running time is a generous 79:57, due to the inclusion of the pre-show FM radio excerpts AND the fact that the taper kept recording once the show had finished.

Turo Taimen: "I don't know what the Radio DJ is talking about but he does mention something about the Wizard of Ozzfest or something like that. In all, this is an A quality audience recording in my opinion. I was dissappointed to hear about the set list for this Ozzfest again. Same old same old. When I first heard about the fact that Sabbath was going to play, I hoped for a surprise song - "Supernaut" maybe? But no, it was just the same numbers that were played on the 2001 and not even "Scary Dreams". Damn!"

"Ozzy is in pretty good shape though and that's a good thing! But during "Into The Void", he screws up on the lyrics of the middle part and his voice cracks a bit on the higher notes, but nothing too bad..."

Source #2 is also a very good to nearly excellent recording (B+). The high end response isn't as strong as version #1 and the taper sounds a bit further from the stage. On the positive side, the bass response is much richer and the overall recording is much cleaner, as it doesn't have the distortions that are present in source #1.The taper used the following equipment scheme: Schoeps MK4s > Nbox > SBM-1 > TCD-D100. The running time is 68:42.

Which version is better? This could easily be a toss-up, since both recordings are nearly excellent due to their clarity. But each is also flawed in some minor way. I would personally lean towards Source #1, but this may because my ears prefer a little extra treble for clarity. I also like the extras and the fact that source #1 doesn't sound quite as distant. Regardless, both are quite good in their own right!

David Gargalino: “After Judas Priest I couldn’t believe that one more band had to play. I had been at DTE for almost 12 hours and things weren’t going to end any time soon which was perfectly fine with me. The band that I thought i had seen the last of back in 2001 was about to go on. The Almighty Black Sabbath. I think it was the perfect time for Sabbath to come back into the realm of things. It’s their 35th anniversary as a band and I think Ozzy wanted to be with his closest friends. Black Sabbath for Ozzy was like being back home. It was the most comfortable position he could be in considering what had happen to him 8 months ago. It was an extra treat that all the members were on board......So anyways, darkness had set in over the sunny skies of a beautiful Tuesday afternoon.”

”The stage was instantly transformed and the drapes were down. The camera crew was being set up and a Black Sabbath promo was showing on the screens. Excitement was at an all time high, the pioneer metal masters were on their way. Finally, everyone hears the classic Ozzy voice over the PA. "Oye Oye Oye, I Cant Fucking Hear You!!!" Behind the curtain you can see Iommi and Geezer coming from stage left and stage right. Bill Ward takes position behind his drum set. Then the silhouette of Ozzy came before the curtain and the crowd went crazy. I was 6 feet from the action and I never felt so good to see Black Sabbath. “War Pigs” started and the stage crew ran over and removed the curtain and then was reveled BLACK FUCKING SABBATH. The one thing that caught me eye was how smaller and intimate the stage had become. Bill’s drum riser was in the middle, while Geezer's Ampeg amps were stacked together in a small area and Iommi's trademark wall of amps was trimmed down to eight or so cabs.”

”This was in stark contrast to the past tours. That was OK with me. It seemed all the more fitting to see all the guys close together. Bill has grown out his hair again this time round compared to the short army crew cut he had in 2001. He was still a little over weight but he looked a lot healthier. Iommi had not changed he still was equipment with his red Gibson SG and that trademark mustache and glasses. Geezer had not changed one bit either but he sported a new bass (looks like a fender precision bass body with a Larkin neck). But the one person that surprised me the most was Ozzy Osbourne. He looked like the healthiest one and the happiest. This night he ditched the sunglasses, the hanging jewelry, the black sweatshirt (as i had seen previously at Ozzfest 2001 and 2003). He was wearing a silk Black shirt with blue sleeves. His previous red highlights were gone and he sported his normal hair color. Ozzy looked like he just came out of the mid-seventies. I don't think he has looked better than he did tonight. He seemed to have a hell of of time and truly enjoyed every minute. When they started War Pigs, I was instantly blown away by the shear power of Geezer's amp. Since i was standing right in front of him, his amps over powered the other band members. So I got to appreciate the amazing bass work of Geezer. But altogether the band never sounded so good. The set list was quick but to the point. Yeah i wish they could have expanded on the set list especially leaving out the usual War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man songs. I miss The Wizard but It was great hearing Fairies Wear Boots and hearing the intro to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. But all in all, I took whatever was given all in. Who's cares what they played just to witness Black Sabbath again was all that I cared. Ozzy had his Coffee and Tea mugs on Bill's drum riser. Oz was great and it was nice to see him explain how the odds were against him but he was determined to prove the doctors wrong. And indeed he did and he gave the doctors a big time "Fuck You." Zakk was right about Ozzy, he's a soldier. I hope the get together and make an album, if not at least another tour. If it indeed becomes the last Ozzfest next year I think it would be fitting to have Black Sabbath close it out. But i treasured every moment of seeing Black Sabbath and appreciated what they had done for rock n' roll. I also got what I wish for; a Black Sabbath pick from Geezer. It was a bittersweet moment at the end because it was all over. The last 7 months of anticipating this moment had gone by quick, but as soon as it ended, me and my friend Casey turned to each other and said "We are doing this all over again!!!" (Bootlegged Black Sabbath Set, Got a Geezer Butler Pick. Previously seen Black Sabbath July 31, 2001 and Ozzy Osbourne July 25, 2003)

Definitely the most sought after recording from the OZZFEST 2004 tour. This was the show that featured Rob Halford on lead vocals, replacing Ozzy at the last moment due to his bronchitis. The band dropped “Snowblind” from the set list for the Camden show. It is said that Halford performed to a very mixed reception from the Camden audience, most of which were either disappointed or angry about Ozzy’s no show.

So far, there are TWO known recordings of this show, but neither one has been circulated yet. Source #1 is a microcassette recording, which also includes Bill Ward's pre-show apology. Source #2 is an audience film.
