1/2/82 Hammersmith Odeon London
England Intro-E5150 -> Neon Knights <4:45>, N.I.B. <5:11>, Children Of The Sea <6:30>, Country Girl <4:21>, Guitar Intro <1:38> -> Black Sabbath <7:05>, War Pigs [Tony breaks string, but continues] <8:56>, Slipping Away <1:27> -> Vinny Appice’s Drum Solo <1:44>, Iron Man [incomplete] <5:39>, The Mob Rules [fragment from near the end of the song] <1:51>, Paranoid [fragment; 1st verse, ends in middle of 2nd verse] -> Heaven & Hell [reprise; incomplete] <1:06>, Voodoo [fragment; 1st verse, partial chorus, ends during Tony’s solo] <1:32> Fair to good audience film, done from the left side (Geezer’s side). The London ’82 film looks a bit better than London ’81, but not by much. The image quality is still quite blurry on the 3rd generation copy I have, but at least we get some nice camera shots here to follow the action on stage. From the angle at which the filmer is shooting, we can often see all four members of the band playing.

Like the London ’81 film (which was probably done by the same person), London ’82 is one of very few concert videos available of the Dio-Appice-Iommi-Butler lineup. It’s unfortunate that fans of the MOB RULES era will have tolerate such mediocre footage to see these guys in action during that tour. Aside from the silent LIVE EVIL reels, this is currently the best footage available of a nearly complete show from this tour.

To make matters worse, the audio track for London ‘82 is quite poor due to the excess distortion in the source tape. The first half of the show is complete, but the songs get a bit fragmentary after “War Pigs”. It’s possible that the filmer didn’t have enough film or battery life to get the complete show, so they cut the camera on to capture the highlights towards the end. The running time is approximately 57 minutes.

I should note that there is an excellent fan authored version out there that contains two additional audio tracks (in Dolby 2.0 AND 4.1 surround sound), in addition to original camera audio. The restored audio utilized the following sources:

Cedar Rapids, Iowa 3/15/82 - Neon Knights, N.I.B., Children Of The Sea, Black Sabbath

Hammersmith Odeon – London, U.K. – 12/31/81: Country Girl

City Hall – Newcastle, U.K. – 1/7/82: War Pigs, Slipping Away, Iron Man, Mob Rules, Heaven And Hell, Paranoid, Voodoo

Original video source – Guitar intro, Drum Solo, Voodoo

Although purists might want to tolerate the godawful distorted monaural sound track, it is stunning to behold the amazing sound upgrade of the restored tracks – especially the 4.1 version. This ‘restored’ version has a running time of 53:27.
2/16/82 Greensboro Coliseum Complex Greensboro NC U.S.
This show was both filmed and recorded by the band, which later used several tracks for the LIVE EVIL album. The 16mm video stock remains largely uncirculated, save for a few reels, which were leaked into circulation. Read the entry for Dallas 5/12/82 for more details on the LIVE EVIL films.

Like the Dallas and San Antonio shows in May, Greensboro was said to have been filmed professionally for the band. See Dallas 5/12/82 for more information on the LIVE EVIL films.

5/12/82 Dallas Convention Center Arena Dallas TX U.S. Reel #1: Heaven And Hell [taken from LIVE EVIL]. Most of this real is just a compilation of various live shots from this show.

Reel #2: Iron Man,E5150, Neon Knights (part of), NIB, Children of the Sea (Cuts) [Running time: 19m]

Reel #3: Heaven & Hell, Iommi Solo, Sign of the Southern Cross, Voodoo, Black Sabbath [Running time: 31m]
There has been a great deal of interest in the LIVE EVIL films, which were professionally shot for the band towards the end of the MOB RULES tour. Given that there is so little video footage in circulation of Sabbath performing with Dio from 1980-82, it’s no wonder! Filming was done at three different shows (Greensboro, NC 2/16/82, Dallas, TX 5/12/82 and San Antonio, TX 5/13/82) for this project, which was shelved after the Dio/Appice/Iommi/Butler line-up split up during the mixing of LIVE EVIL. Since then, two to three reels of this footage were leaked into circulation via some private collectors. But according to Alfred Wayne, this is simply the tip of the iceberg!

Alfred Wayne: "Some info about the LIVE EVIL show with Ronnie James Dio. You may not believe this but I can assure you it is the truth. I have seen the entire, produced show. It is probably the greatest Sabbath document ever; bar the Paris "Rock of the 70's" show.”

“The contents of the finished album were recorded and filmed on three dates in '82. The shows were covered with 5 to 9 cameras per song. There are over 30 reels of 16mm film containing over 13 hours of footage and a 60-minute promo reel on videocassette for the 85 minutes of material. The filming of these shows was contracted by Sabbath management at the time. When the band broke up in the fall of '82 the masters were discarded but saved from the scrap heap by an employee of Casey Films.”

“So to answer another question, Warner Brothers does not have and never did have any of this footage in their vault. The only copies of this material in existence are in the hands of a private collector. Some years ago when the films first owner obtained them, 2 reels were transferred to VHS cassette. A copy of that cassette and the promo reel were sold to an exclusive Black Sabbath collector who was able to verify their authenticity. The same 2 reels that were transferred to VHS were later sold for over $700 (US) to another film collector in England.”

“Because of the copyright issues and the probability that the current Black Sabbath management team would withhold any type of release, I am told that the concert will stay in private hands until it would become public domain.”

Reel #1 is 28 minutes long and has an embedded time code on the bottom of the screen. It is mostly silent, with the exception of the final 5 minutes, which shows the band performing “Heaven And Hell” WITH sound, which is actually taken from the LIVE EVIL album. The perfect sync on this track indicates that both this footage and the audio are almost definitely from the same show that the album version originated from. The “Heaven And Hell” video has a Warner Brothers watermark at the bottom of the screen, which has led many to speculate that this clip was to be used for a WB promo clip.

The rest of this footage is fragmentary and is a compilation of wide range and extreme close up shots. Silent or not, this film is quite a treat for fans of this particular lineup.

Alexander Rack, webmaster of black-sabbath.de, wrote in with this interesting tidbit about some hidden footage on the HEADLESS IN RUSSIA DVD-R’s. He wrote: “Did you ever saw these Russian bootleg DVD’s with the TV broadcast of the Moscow 1989 shows? As a kind of secret menu [also known as ‘Easter Eggs’ or hidden features], they contain a preview of an "upcoming" release – it is 1 min of LIVE EVIL footage (Intro and “Neon Knights”) with audio!”

The trailer for this LIVE EVIL film appears to be yet more audio synched footage from the aforementioned films. I’ve received a ton of mail asking when this LIVE EVIL footage might be released, but I have heard nothing further about this hinted release as of April 2004.
