This version of “A Song For Jeffrey” is simply the album version from Jethro Tull’s 1968 debut THIS WAS.)

Official CD’s: ROLLING STONES-Rock And Roll Circus [released 10/15/96] (see above)

CD Bootlegs: Archangel Rides Again

Vinyl Bootlegs: Archangel Rides Again

CD-R’s: More Sabbath Stuff!!

Notes: In late 1968, Tony Iommi left Earth to pursue an opportunity to play guitar for Jethro Tull. Tull were invited to record an appearance for a planned TV special called ‘The Rolling Stones Rock 'N' Roll Circus. The taping took place on December 11th and 12th, 1968 at Wembley Arena in London. Tony's playing cannot actually be heard on any of these bootlegs, since it is really the album version of the song! But Tony can be "seen" playing with Tull in the aforementioned video.

??/??/73 NECROMANDUS sessions London Mogodisimo, Nightjar, A Black Solitude, Homicidal Psychopath, Still Born Beauty, Gypsy Dancer, *Orexis Of Death, *Mogodisimo (pt. 2)

*features Tony Iommi on guitar
PRO Tony produced this album for Necromandus, a band who Tony had taken under his wing during this period. Necromandus even opened for Sabbath on their U.K. tour in 1973. Their music is a mix of progressive rock and jazz, not so much hard rock as their name would have you believe. Iommi always had a soft spot for jazz styled guitar playing, so it makes sense that he’d like these guys.

Iommi offers up a jazzy guitar solo for the song “Orexis Of Death”, somewhat similar to the meandering Dorian leads he would use on songs like “Planet Caravan” and the mellow part of “Symptom Of The Universe”. He also plays 2nd guitar on the short instrumental “Mogodisimo (pt. 2).

Sadly, the album was shelved and never got a proper release in 1973. It was re-issued 25 years later as NECROTHOLOGY. There are two versions of these sessions in circulation. Version #1 is the mixed album with fade-in’s on certain songs. Version #2 is the unmixed album with the studio chatter and count-in’s included. #2 is slightly superior in terms of sound quality.

??/??/77 QUARTZ (Debut album)
Mainline Riders, Sugar Rain, Street Fighting Lady Hustler, Devils Brew, Smokie, Around and Around, Little Old Lady, Circles [outtake - featuring Ozzy & Brian May; re-issued in 1980 as the b-side for "Stoking The Fires Of Hell"] PRO Birmingham’s Quartz emerged during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era, which launched such bands as Def Leppard, Saxon and Iron Maiden. The band originally started out as Bandy Leggs and became mates with Sabbath while opening for them during their 1975 U.K. tour. 2nd guitarist Geoff Nicholls would later join Sabbath in 1979, where he would switch to keyboards, only occasionally supplying his guitar talents live. Drummer Malcolm Cope helped the Sabs out during the pre-production for BORN AGAIN.

Their 1977 debut album was originally released in 1977 by United Artists, who promptly went bankrupt after it was released! It was re-issued in 1979 by Jet Records in a plain brown jacked with the title DELETED. It has remained out of print for over two decades until Sanctuary expressed interesting re-issuing this record in 2004. This re-issue should be of particular interest to Sabbath fans. It was commonly known that Tony Iommi produced the record, but he in fact also contributed his guitar work to two tracks, as well as a flute solo in the song “Sugar Rain”. Ozzy also laid down vocals for that same track, as well as the obscure –b-side “Circles” [for the single “Stoking The Fires Of Hell”]. Queen’s Brian May also contributed guitar work to “Circles”. Their performances went uncredited for contractual reasons.

THE DEP SESSIONS (Official album - Released 10/4/2004): Gone, From Another World, Don't You Tell Me, Don't Drag The River, Fine, Time Is The Healer, I'm Not The Same Man, It Falls Through Me
PRO Official Albums: THE DEP SESSIONS WITH GLENN HUGHES (2004 Sanctuary)

CD Bootlegs: EIGHTH STAR (Grand Cross)

CD-R’s: IOMMINATOR [‘Don’t You Tell Me” only]

Notes: 9 years after they parted ways during the opening weeks of the SEVENTH STAR tour, Iommi and Hughes agreed to collaborate once again. This time around, it was definitely NOT intended to be a Black Sabbath record. Without the burden of the Sabbath albatross around his neck, Glenn was free to sing and write in a style much more natural to him. Joining them in the studio were veterans Don Airey (keyboards) and ex-Trapeze mate and Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland.

They demoed eight songs for this planned studio album. The project was shelved once Iommi began gearing up for Sabbath’s 1997 Ozzfest reunion tour with Ozzy.

Shortly thereafter, a cassette dub of seven of those tracks leaked into underground circulation as EIGHTH STAR. The sound quality of the EIGHTH STAR bootleg could be described as excellent overall but is a tad worse that it ought to be. Since it was sourced from a cassette dub, you can tell that there is a little frequency loss in this copy. But what for it is, the quality is quite acceptable and nothing to complain about. On an alphabetical scale, I’d give it an A-.

The 8th track, “Time Is A Healer”, remains under wraps by Iommi & Hughes. Glenn commented on this in an interview with Ballbuster:

Ballbuster: “Was there only seven original songs?”

Glenn Hughes: “No, there's one more song, "Time Is A Healer." Just to prove it wasn't me who bootlegged it, I have a tape with that on it. When the tape got out, I'm going ‘Fucking hell! Did I give anybody a copy?’ Cause you know you have to think about that and I went, ‘Nope’.

Instead, the bootlegs for the 1996 HUGHES/IOMMI sessions included “To Cry You A Song”, which was strangely re-titled “Shakin’ My Wings” on the bootlegs. This song originally appeared on the 1996 Jethro Tull tribute TO CRY YOU A SONG – A COLLECTION OF TULL TALES. Joining Glenn on this song are Mick Abrahams, Clive Bunker, Derek Sherinian and Robert Berry.

Additionally, there is a single remix for the1986 Sabbath track “No Stranger To Love”.

These Iommi/Hughes demos are fairly developed and much more in the style of Glenn Hughes than Black Sabbath. Iommi certainly makes his presence known with some solid and catch riffs, but the vibe is much more laid back and soulful than their previous collaborations on SEVENTH STAR. Although it is not the “heavy” record that Black Sabbath fans have come to expect from Tony, the songs are well crafted and heartfelt. If you’re a fan of Glenn Hughes, then you’ll definitely need to check these tracks out.

Glenn revived the song “Gone” [re-titled as “I’m Gone” on the bootlegs] for his RETURN OF CRYSTAL KARMA album in 2000 and also trotted the song out in concert a bunch.

In January 2004, Joe Siegler announced that Tony Iommi was going to head back into the studio to complete this long neglected studio record for official release. This was further confirmed on August 4, 2004, when Glenn Hughes put the following letter on his site (glennhughes.com):

Glenn Hughes: “I had dinner with Tony Iommi on Sunday night. We are pleased to announce that the album which was originally bootlegged will be officially released with an extra track called "Time is the Healer". It has been re mixed and mastered. It will be out on Sanctuary this fall. I will be going to the UK in October to write with Tony for a future project.”

In August 2004, Rock Detector spoke with Neil Murray about the sessions to finish this album. "I spent one afternoon replacing the bass on two songs, one of which only had to be replaced because Tony Iommi had altered the riffs used in the song, or the original Glenn Hughes bass track would have been used," he said.

Keyboard parts for the album were recorded by both Don Airey and Geoff Nicholls. But the original drum tracks laid down by Dave Holland were redone by Jimmy Copley (Tears For Fears, Paul Rodgers Band, M3).

The finished album will finally be released by Sanctuary Records on October 4th, 2004 as THE DEP SESSIONS WITH GLENN HUGHES. It will contain newly finished versions of the songs that appeared on EIGHTH STAR, as well as the previously unheard “Time Is A Healer”.
