| 6/12/2008 | MASTER OF REALITY tour | I have moved two alleged shows in Rochester (9/10/71) and Syracuse (9/11/71) to unconfirmed status, due to new evidence from Eric Bown. There is no written evidence to confirm that Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath ever shared the stage for these two shows. The claim originates from a verbal account I received from Raymond Mills. Raymond Mills [raymundo1018@yahoo.com]: “It doesn't surprise me that no one has heard of this gig before, because Syracuse and Rochester were little known stomping grounds for both Sabbath and Zep, due to the fact that they each had a very fanatical fan base from Syracuse University and the surrounding upstate New York community colleges. The Syracuse University FM station featured "The Sabbath Hour" and a "Get Your Led Out" Hour featuring entire album sides and live bootlegs each week. The cold climate meant that we stayed inside grooving to this hard rock, especially Sabbath and Zeppelin. [“We come from the land of the ice and snow - From the midnight sun where the hot winds blow” - “People think we're insane because we a frowning all the time”] I think there are more rainy and overcast days in Syracuse than in England!!! Maybe that's why Sabbath and Zep liked it there?]" “In fact, Sabbath played at Rochester on their own later that year on the 28th of October in 1971. They also opened for Mountain with Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi at the then-named Onondaga War Memorial in Syracuse earlier in the year on March 31st, 1971. After the gig, I heard that the original opening act for the September 10th Zeppelin show had fallen through and Sabbath was contacted to fill the bill at the last minute to the surprise and delight of all in attendance.” “Yes, these were good memories - which were enhanced by a recipe out of the Jim Morrison and Beatles Sgt. Peppers mental cookbook. Both bands were in fine form, it was almost like a battle of the bands. Ozzy vs Plant, Iommi vs Page, Geezer vs Jones and Ward vs Bonham...but you could sense the respect that each band had for one another." “The Syracuse show was so awesome we hitchhiked down to Rochester the next night [Sept 11] for a repeat, but both bands must have scored some excellent "chemical aphrodisiacs" and groupies in Syracuse, because the energy level was not the same. [My friend and I certainly did...college girls from several campuses in the western and upstate New York area were there in abundance] I wrote some free-verse poetry and other stream of consciousness stuff, which may include a song-list in my high school yearbook. I'll drag it out of storage and send you what I have by the end of the month!!!” P.S. - The other memory from being in the third row was that my body was numb for about a week. I was chanting songs from both Sabbath and Zep at my Catholic High School, which convinced the priests and nuns that I was possessed. I had flashbacks and dreams about the show for years…” Raymond's claims have been refuted by Eric Bown, who also provided me two newspaper articles that made no mention of Black Sabbath performing with them. Eric Bown: "My name is Eric and I run the Zeppelin site www.ledzeppelin-database.com which is dedicated to documenting everything that I can find about Zeppelin. On your site I see that you have Zeppelin and Sabbath sharing the bill on Sep 10th and 11th 1971,and I am writing to you because I don't think that that is actually accurate." "I recently found the attached reviews from a Syracuse newspaper from a few days later and there is no mention of Sabbath. That prompted me to read your site to see what evidence you had found and it looks like you just have a fan memory and that fan's memory seems to be wrong. Zeppelin very rarely had opening acts by 71 and that doesn't mean that they wouldn't share the bill with Sabbath, but the fan said that the original opening band canceled at the last moment and I would bet that there is a 95% chance that there never was an opening band slated to perform." "I actually put on my site that Zeppelin played with Sabbath on those dates based on what you had found, but I am going to remove it in the near future." |

| 5/9/2008 | PARANOID Era Shows | Milwaukee 3/71 show? Conrad: "I saw Sabbath in either the Spring or Summer of 1971 (I think) at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee Wisconsin. I'm not sure about the date (or even the year), but I do remember that the opening act was Sir Lord Baltimore. It's not on any of your lists and sadly I haven't found any reference to it through Google. Maybe you will have better luck. Please let me know if you find out anything about the date." |

| 5/7/2008 | MASTER OF REALITY Tour | Chicago 1971 date challenged. For a long time, the actual date and venue for the Chicago '71 audience tape were something of a mystery. Finally, in June 2004, one of the people who surfaced this show came forth with an allegedly correct date and venue. My source told me that the show had been recorded at the Auditorium Theatre on August 12th, 1971. The running time for the complete recording is just under 60 minutes (59:44). Another proposed date is September 23rd, 1971 at the same venue. This claim is suppoted by a ticket stub provided by Jim Summaria. Jim Summaria: "I was looking around your site and found tour dates. You have Sabbath coming to Chicago on August 12, 1971 at the Auditorium Theater. Here's my ticket stub of that show marked September 23. I thought you'd like to know. I do have Mountain Bus opening for Sabbath. If I remember my history correct Mountain Bus was sued by Mountain (Leslie West and group) and had to stop using the name. More useless information in my brain." It is unlikely they played Chicago twice in the space of a month, but anything is possible. Some newpaper clippings from the local Chicago papers would probably help us clear this one up. |

| 4/30/2008 | TECHNICAL ECSTASY Audios | New audio from Syracuse '76 on Wolfgang's Vault? This professionally recorded show was recently posted on Wolfgang's Vault. While it initially appeared to be something "new" from the vaults, it appears that they've simply changed the venue and date for the Pittsburgh 12/8/76 recording they've had up for a while. This of course brings into question the original theories about the correct date and venue for this tape. I will be looking into this more in the coming weeks. Thanks to Hartwig Schuck for bringing this one to my attention. |

| 5/31/2007 | NEVER SAY DIE Shows | Corrected city for 10/18/78 – Bad Wimpfen, not Heilbronn. Ralph Kaukel “You have Heilbronn have as a tour date (October 18th, 1978) for the NEVER SAY DIE tour. The concert was not in Heilbronn, but in Bad Wimpfen a town quite close to Heilbronn. It sure was the first (and last) time that a band of the caliber of BS showed up. Normally this area is 3rd tier for concerts, because we are very close to Stuttgart (40 km). I remember well that some guys who had elder brothers went to the concert (I was too young and only interested in Rainbow anyway :-( ). The next day everybody talked about Van Halen and how they went down a storm.” |

| 4/18/2007 | BORN AGAIN Shows | Although the original itinerary had the Madrid ‘83 show scheduled to take place at Pabellon Del Deportes Del Real, it was later moved to Estadio Román Valero. Apologies to the trading community for confusing the venue on this show for so long! Ramón Rubio Moreno (Madrid): “It's right in the ticket and it's correct. The concert was at Roman Valero Stadium, a little stadium in the south part of Madrid. It is a soccer stadium with a capacity of 10,000. The complete bill was Black Sabbath, Girlschool and Diamond Head. The last one does not appear in the ticket. I send you a copy the ticket. I have the program and the T-shirt too. The Real Madrid Pavilion (Pabellon Del Deportes Del Real) is another venue, which was demolished in 2004.” |
Ramón Rubio Moreno |
| 4/18/2007 | BORN AGAIN Shows | Diamond Head did not appear at the Dublin ’83 show. Alan Mullen: “I wrote a review to you (Joe Siegler) previously about the BORN AGAIN concert in Dublin (Dalymount Park). I can confirm Diamond Head didn't appear - Nor did the "arm full of albums" (see right hand side of ticket), nor did the lights when Sabbath came on!” |
Alan Mullen / Joe Siegler |
| 3/4/2007 | OZZFEST 2005 Audios | During the European & Ozzfest 2005 tours, Tony and Ozzy would often perform a very short piece at the beginning of "Children Of The Grave" that most have titled "Sleeping Village". In truth, the correct title for this short piece of music is "A Bit Of Finger". This is the short acoustic intro that precedes the electric instrumental "Sleeping Village". The confusion probably arises from the fact that the song contains the lyric "Sleeping village, cockerel's cry." While some may reasonably argue that "A Bit Of Finger" is a part of "Sleeping Village", the introduction definitely has it's own separate title. I've chosen to update my set lists to correct this minor detail. Sabbath weren't always very clear on the albums about where some of their song sections began or ended. The correct song delineations were made a bit clearer when Hal Leonard published a series of guitar transcriptions of the first 3 Black Sabbath albums several years ago. |

| 2/18/2007 | SBS Era Shows | Don Fahnestock: "I don't have a ticket stub, but the January show in Hershey was my first real rock concert. The opening act was Blue Oyster Cult. Just wanted to let you know as I noticed you did not have an opening act listed." | Don Fahnestock |
| 2/18/2007 | TYR Era Shows | Andreas: "Great site! Lots of wonderful stuff. But I have a little correction for you: The Concert on October 9, 1990 in Innsbruck was played at Olympiahalle, not Dogana." | Andreas |
| 2/18/2007 | MOB RULES Audios | Rhino Handmade will be issuing BLACK SABBATH: LIVE AT THE HAMMERSMITH ODEON on May 1st, 2007. Based upon the track listing, it is likely a recording from the 3rd night - January 2nd, 1981. However, it could also be a compilation from all 4 nights. | |
| 2/18/2007 | OZZY GIGS - 1991 | Bryan Berry: "I just wanted to give you an update for the website. I was just looking through the newly posted itinerary for Ozzy, and found that a show I attended isn't listed. Ozzy played the Warfield in San Francisco on November 2, 1991. I was under the impression at the time that it was a warm up show since it was in such a small theater. Looking at the itinerary, it appears that it was the first U.S. date for this mini U.S. tour. It was a killer show, especially because of the size of the venue. The opening act was Infectious Grooves. One thing I remember thinking at the time was how fit Ozzy looked. Standout Sabbath songs in the set were "War Pigs", "Snowblind" and of course "Paranoid". Keep rockin'." | Bryan Berry |
| 2/18/2007 | OZZY gigs | Mike Caton: "Hello again! I noticed in the known shows that there was no mention of the Rochester NY - January 27, 1984 show with Motley Crue and Waysted. This one I know happened, because I was there :-) Just thought I'd let you know." | Mike Caton |

| 1/24/2007 | Ozzy gigs | Dave added opening act info for Ozzy's 1981 Day On The Green appearance. Dave: "Great site I was looking through the Ozzy tour info you posted and can add some info for you. I grew up in the bay area and started going to "Days On The Green" back in '79. These were festival shows with multiple bands. The first one I saw in '79 was Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, AC/DC, & Mahogany Rush. The next year I went to the '80 DOG with Sabbath, Molly Hatchet, Cheap Trick and Journey." "To the point - even though back in those days I was dabbling in "herbal" remedies and healing "powders", on the July '81 DOG, I know for sure Motorhead was not on that bill. To the best of my knowledge, Ozzy was billed as special guest and was the second to perform after some local band (whom I cannot remember) then was Loverboy, Pat Travers, B.O.C. and Heart headlined the event. Hope this helps." |
Dave |
| 1/21/2007 | OZZY gigs | Petri Kaasalainen: "I noticed that you've added a list of Ozzy's past tour dates to your web site. Great idea! I have some information about Ozzy's Finnish dates. Ozzy has done only two shows (as a solo artist) in Finland. The first date was on January 12, 1983 at UKK-Halli, Helsinki, Finland. Ozzy was a opening act for Whitesnake. On March 29, 1989 he performed at Jäähalli (Ice Hall) in Helsinki, this time as a headliner. The German band U.D.O. was the supporter." | Petri Kaasalainen |
| 1/21/2007 | OZZY gigs | Added Copenhagen 11/28/95 show. Alex Bergdahl: "Ozzy had added three songs at this show which were not performed in Gothenburg three days prior: Perry Mason, Mama I´m Coming Home and Desire. This is still the best show I have seen with Ozzy. He was on FIRE that night and actually pointed his watergun at me and shot me straight in the face. Me with glasses and all....." |

| 1/20/2007 | HEAVEN AND HELL Shows | Corrected date and opening act for Eric, PA show - 10/19/80 with Saxon. Douglas Piper: "For the 1980 Sabbath tour, you have the concert at the Erie County Fieldhouse in Erie PA, listed as Oct. 24th with BOC as an opening act. Neither is true. I was at the show and still have the ticket stub. The show was on October 19th. And BOC did not open for them -- Saxon did. BOC headlined at the Fieldhouse in July of 1980, and did not come back to open for Sabbath in October." |
Douglas Piper |
| 1/20/2007 | MASTER OF REALITY Shows | Added Providence 7/30/71 show. John Sunderland: "I thought you'd be interested in a Black Sabbath concert I saw which is not mentioned in your database. This is of particular interest to me because it was my first rock concert, a 15-year-old Sabbath fan in 1971. Rolling Stone magazine wrote an article on the show at the RI Auditorium in the October 28, 1971 issue. Here is the link to the archived article:" www.rollingstone.com/news/story/9437616/how_black_was_my_sabbath "From what I can gather, the concert was on July 30, 1971. Although I don't remember the exact date off the top of my head, the article states, "This was their third concert in as many days in as many cities, and they had two more to play that week, and planes to catch for each. They had arrived that afternoon at the Rhode Island airport from Philadelphia. It was the third week of a six-week tour of the eastern United States." "If they had played in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on July 29, as your database mentions, then Providence would have been the next stop. Also, I remember Black Oak Arkansas opening for them. I wish I could remember more, but too many brain cells have died." |

| 1/7/2007 | SABOTAGE Era Shows | Confirmed Philadelphia 8/6/75 date at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. I'd still like some harder proof on this one, but this looks legit to me. John Bella: "I'm the guy that originally confirmed that Sabbath played at Asbury Park on 8/5/75 (not 8/6 . . . .). At the time I think I mentioned that I remembered Sabbath was scheduled to play at the Spectrum the following day (I contemplated trying to make that gig also as I had cousins who lived in Philly that were into Sabbath but things didn't work out . . . .). Anyway, I recently stumbled across a website from a guy who took the time to list all of the concerts he had been to over the past 30 something years and one of them was Black Sabbath at the Spectrum on 8/6/75!! http://www.unioncountyreporter.org/concerts.html This date has long been listed on bootlegs and trade lists as the source show for Sabbath’s 1975 King Biscuit Flower Hour performance. But as of 2001, history was to be rewritten when new information from an ex-King Biscuit employee indicated that the show was actually recorded in Asbury Park, NJ! See 8/5/75 for more info on these tapes. |

Still need to confirm this, but could the Buenos Aires FM broadcast could have been from the 2nd night?? Or is there another source? Guillermo Rivas: “First of all, excuse me for my English. In your page, you say that you have been informed of a gig in Buenos Aires on September 4 in 1994 with Slayer and Kiss. I was there. First was Hermética, an Argentinean band, then Slayer and then Sabbath. Tony Martin announced the band during "Black Sabbath" track and said that it was special to play that track that night because they had three original members in the band (Tony, Geezer, Bill). They played for about 1 hour and a half. After a few months, a radio station put some parts of the show on the air and I recorded this, but it’s not complete. I think this was due to some legal reasons. I have lost the tape, but I remember it has "Into The Void”, “War Pigs”, “Black Sabbath, “Neon Knights” and “Headless Cross”. |

I remember it quite well - the drummer for Brownsville Station tossed a drumstick out in the audience and it bounced off my fingertips to land in someone else's hands :-(" "It was not one of Ozzy's better nights - the microphone stand was the only thing holding him up during a good portion of it. "Iron Man" was played almost at the end of the set. I remember that because some idiot did nothing but scream "Iron Man" nonstop through the whole set until they did play it." |

| 2/17/2006 | HEAVEN AND HELL Cancelled Shows | Updated notes for Binghampton, NY 9/27/80. Black Sabbath cancelled their appearance here in Binghampton, but Blue Oyster Cult did go ahead and play this show. Christopher Scott wrote in to tell us the rest of the story: Christopher Scott: "The 9/27/80 show itself wasn't cancelled - Sabbath cancelled. The show did go on as a BOC show. The tickets were printed as BOC tickets so there must have been prior notice. The story was that someone's father had died. I believe it may have been Bill Ward's dad. The show was originally advertised as a BLACK & BLUE gig, so we were all very dissapointed when it was announced Sab wouldn't be here. The merchandise trucks were here though and that's how I got all my H&H memorabilia. Next best thing, I guess. A little trivia: A local band The Rods took the place of Sabbath that night. This was a favor called in by Dio, seeing that the singer/guitarist is his cousin and also the guitarist on the Elf LP's." "More trivia: Ozzy also cancelled here that year. The trucks and busses were here but a last minute someone called it off. Even Leppard were hanging out talking to everybody saying they didn't have a clue what was going on." Strangely enough, I also have a ticket stub for a show in Charleston, WV, which states 9/27/80 as the show date?! It would have made more sense for Sabbath to have followed their Charlotte gig with one in Charleston, but it is not yet known whether they did play in West Virginia on this date. |

| 2/16/2006 | EUROPEAN TOUR 2005 | Added new source for Oslo 2005 Source #2: DeeP: "Great site you have there! It's been a great help to me in helping try and obtain some Black Sabbath bootlegs. I've managed to get a few copies of the 'better' quality shows you've recommended. Also through the site I did manage to find and download the Oslo show from 2005, which was great as I was there on the night. I also managed to record the same show using a Sony Minidisc Recorder. The quality is excellent, slightly apart during the start of 'Black Sabbath' when a couple of Czech blokes are heard talking. Don't know what they're saying! My recording also has the 'play-out' song of 'Changes' on the end, as the crowd are leaving the arena. You can really feel the atmosphere of the crowd - there's a girl occasionally screaming through the show, but this doesn't spoil the recording, just enhances the vibe. I was upstairs, on right side, stage looking and about 1/2 way back." |

| 2/10/2006 | TECHNICAL ECSTASY Videos | Two songs from this session appear on THE BLACK SABBATH STORY, VOLUME 1. A bearded Bill Ward gets a rare vocal showcase in the video for his song, "It's Alright". "Rock And Roll Doctor" is also featured on this official DVD release. Who knows? Maybe more songs were filmed? I did ask Les Martin (Geezer's ex-bass tech) for his thoughts on this session and he told me the following... Les Martin: "We were in the old Columbia sound stages doing production rehearsals when we filmed "It's Alright". It is now called Studio Instrument Rentals (S.I.R.). In fact, the sound stage we used still had the yellow brick road painted on the floor from "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"! It's in Hollywood at the corner of Sunset & Vine. We did rehearsals with our new set before going out on tour. They used the opportunity to film / video some tracks there." |

| 2/7/2006 | MYTHOLOGY Audios | Tape of Queens Hall, Siloth, U.K. 7/13/68 show surfaces! This is a private audience recording of Mythology’s very last show. During their final days, the band included Neil Marshall (bass), Chris Smith (vocals), Tony Iommi (lead guitar) and Bill Ward (drums). Mythology became dispirited after an embarassing incident where all four members were fined 15 pounds for possession of cannabis resin in Carlisle on May 27th, 1968. Since this was considered to be a serious offense at the time, much of their gigging work dried up as a result. Reluctantly, they agreed to disband after this final show in Siloth. These revelations and the following information about the tape were recently discussed in the recent book, HOW BLACK WAS OUR SABBATH. "Keith Jefferson recorded the gig using a reel-to-reel tape machine. The only surviving record of any of the band's performances, it contains nine tracks including such enduring blues favourites as "Steppin' Out", "Dust My Blues" [a.k.a. “Dust My Broom”], "Morning Dew" and "Spoonful". [From HOW BLACK WAS OUR SABBATH (pg. #10)] As of February 2006, an apparently complete copy of the show has begun circulating. The running time of the recording is 45:41. The quality is very good at best and gives us a very unique opportunity to hear how Tony and Bill playing together before Earth and Black Sabbath! |

| 1/17/2006 | PARANOID Era Audios | Added review of Paramus 3/9/71 Good (at best) quality audience recording, which just surfaced as of 2005. Sabbath performed two shows for charity in Paramus, New Jersey. This show was sponsored by St. Matthews Episcopal Church Coffee House. The profits from this show went towards work support projects and inner-city missions. In early 2005, Sabbathlive received the following e-mail message from Ken Riccio, who was writing simply to confirm that the show happened. Ken Riccio: "I was at this show so I can confirm that it took place. I was 15 at the time and this was the very first concert I ever attended. The opening act was a great local band called Spider, they were an excellent band with some really good originals but they just seemed to disappear." Upon further discussion, Ken mentioned having a 1st generation copy of this never before circulated audience recording from the Paramus ’71 benefit show. It has been recorded by his friend, the late Bobby Hefferman. The original master cassette met an untimely death after it was fed to a hungry tape deck, so Ken’s 1st generation copy (on an ancient Ampex C60) is the only surviving source. Ken was kind enough to give me both the original cassette and his own CD transfer of the tape, complete with his own custom cover art! Here are the liner notes from his custom CD cover: “This disk was made from a vintage cassette recording by Bobby Hefferman. The sound quality, to say the least, was horrible since high fidelity portable cassette recorders weren’t exactly commonplace back in 1971. Besides – as freshmen in High School, we could barely afford the outrageous price of $5.00 for a concert let alone massive dollars for good recording equipment. But now with the miracle of modern recording software, I was able to raise the quality to a level somewhere in the range of terrible. For me, this disk is not so much about the sound – but more about the memory of that night. This was my very first concert, so the recording holds a special memory for me. I hope that even in its poor quality you’ll find your own enjoyable memory from that night.” “Don’t wait ‘til the end of your life to let it pass before your eyes and ears. Enjoy some of it now.” On the back cover, Ken inserted a small photo of his belated friend and the following note: “In memory of Bobby Hefferman. I enjoyed many memories of Bobby while making this disk. A friendship cut short, but long remembered.” I was touched by Ken’s tribute to his friend and also feel also that the show should inevitably be shared in the same spirit in which it was given. Since Ken’s initial recording of the show was compressed into MP3 before being authored as CD (simply a newbie mistake), I went ahead and did a new transfer of his 1st generation cassette. The tape is currently not in wide circulation, but may soon see a wider release. Ken was quite humble in rating his recording as “terrible”. Overall, the recording is fairly clear with just a slight murkiness in the high frequency response. It’s sometimes difficult to make out Ozzy’s stage raps, but the music is loud, clear and enjoyable. There’s a little bit of tape hiss underneath, but it’s not loud enough to be annoying. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the tape was for its age and the way in which it had been recorded. Not quite as nice as Sheffield 1/14/71, but not too much worse. Like many shows from the last U.S. tour to promote PARANOID, there’s a sense that Black Sabbath still need to prove something to American audiences. This New Jersey crowd are warm towards the band, but seem to be quietly studying them throughout the show. There is a long pause after Ozzy introduces the band while Tony tunes his guitar. Although it’s difficult to make out much of what Ozzy says here, you can hear him clearly say, “It smells rather nice in here”, obviously noting the fragrance of cannabis in the room. This would be the first of many times that Iommi would have to attend to his uncooperative instrument. The first few numbers (“N.I.B.” and “War Pigs”) seem a bit sluggish and uninspired in retrospect, but I’m sure the audience was still impressed by the wall of sound these 4 guys produced. The slower-than-usual tempo made me question the tape speed at first, but adjusting the pitch only made later songs sound too fast. There is a small cut in the middle of one of Tony’s solos for “War Pigs”, probably due to some damage that was inadvertently done to the master. You can hear the audience chattering a bit while Tony noodles through his opening guitar piece for “Black Sabbath”, which earns them a rapturous response at the end. After that somber number, Ozzy brings out the smelling salts as he petitions everyone to stand up and clap for “Iron Man”. We get another welcome pre-MASTER OF REALITY rendition of “Into The Void” with different lyrics on this tape, which I’d rate as a highlight for this somewhat lackluster gig. But don’t take my criticisms the wrong way either. I’m very thankful to Ken for allowing me to be a fly on the wall at a Sabbath show ‘back in the day’ when the band were still earning their medals. The band weren’t playing badly here, just not with the energy you’d expect. |

| 1/16/2006 | VOLUME 4 Era Audios | Added review of Paris 3/3/73 Good to VG+ audience recording, which varies in quality and is incomplete. The first three songs are quite clear with nearly excellent sound. Aside from Geezer being slightly low in the mix (at first), this would first seem to be quite a nice recording by 1973 standards. However, the sound takes on a boomy and somewhat muffled character once the band reaches their 4th number – “Snowblind”. This change in sound quality (for the worse) may have been caused by the taper repositioning their microphones. This tape first turned up on a vinyl boot titled “L'OLYMPIA”, which was something of a generic white-label release of not so grand quality. All copies that I have seen in circulation from this show appear to originate from this bootleg and run no longer than 43 minutes. It’s likely that the over-long “Wicked World” was probably cut from the vinyl boot due to time limitations. It would be nice to know whether a more complete exists from this concert, but I’ve yet to find any further information on this mystery boot. If the venue named on the bootleg “L’OLYMPIA” is indeed correct, then the date for this show is definitely March 3rd, 1973. Many traders list this tape as 2/17/73, but Sabbath were at the Palais des Sports in St. Ouen on France on that date. There’s nothing on the recording to indicate which city the band were playing in at the time, but my bets are on Paris until someone comes forth with more evidence. Paris 3/3/73 was the 2nd of 2 shows that Sabbath played in France during their European tour in the early winter months of 1973. During this time, the Sabs were recording many of their shows with the Rolling Stones mobile recording studio for a planned live album (that would later be shelved). With that in mind, Black Sabbath’s performance seems a little anxious, possibly due to the red light being on. The show opens with an excellent rendition of “Tomorrow’s Dream”. I can’t fault the band for missing any notes, because they are “on” in that respect. There’s just a sense of unease as the band try their best to nail the songs at the expense of their patented groove – the all important secret ingredient to Black Sabbath’s sound. “Cornucopia” feels slightly off balance in the beginning, but the remainder of the songs are well played, but methodical. Benjamin Van Waal was kind enough to translate a review from a French newspaper written by Christian Robquin for us. I have also taken the liberty of re-writing a few awkward passages to help make this a little more coherent. Still, this article will require a little patience, since it was difficult to interpret the author’s meaning in several places. You can read Benjamin’s French to English translation here: http://sabbathlive.com/tours/72V4/art/730303-Paris_translation.htm There is also a picture from the show in the original magazine article located here: http://www.sabbathlive.com/sabtours/V4-art/730303_Paris?full=1 CD Bootlegs: L'OLYMPIA CD-R's: PARIS '73 |

| 1/14/2006 | PARANOID Audios | Added review of Guillaume’s recent remaster of Inglewood 2/23/71. Set List: Tune-up -> Introduction, Paranoid, N.I.B., War Pigs, Black Sabbath, Iron Man, Wicked World -> Guitar Solo -> Wicked World [reprise], Fairies Wear Boots, Day Tripper [cuts] Good to very good audience recording, all depending on which version you happen to find. SABBATHLIVE’s Guillaume Roos recently remastered his copy of the show and made the following observations. Guillaume Roos: “Every versions of this show I had heard so far (most certainly sourced from the "Inglewood 71" bootleg CDR) shared the same flaws, which is to say they played ridiculously fast, were pretty hissy, muddy and had numerous volume fluctuations. I tried to fix these flaws and here is the result. This remaster deserves a VG rating, with only a thin layer of tape phasing.” ”For the technical details lovers, here's what I did : “ - As I said, the speed was too high, so I rectified the pitch 1,5 semitones lower, bringing the total running time from 47 minutes to 52. - The left channel mainly contained the vocals and the drums, while the guitar and the bass were mainly on the right. So I EQed the two channels separately in order to clean the hiss and the saturated bass without altering the sound of each element. - Normalisation of the whole recording at 95% - Fixing of the volume fluctuations. - Removal of some cuts and new track splitting. ”Now, performance wise, this is a very good performance from the "Paranoid" era, really powerful and energetic. Sabbath had not reached the mastery they would gain during the "Master Of Reality" tour, but I don't think they ever were as raw and wild as they were during the "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" tours.” ”One very interesting thing about this particular recording is the 19 seconds track at the very end which seems to be the beginning of a second encore after "Fairies Wear Boots". Unfortunately the tape cuts during the leading riff, so we only get to hear Ozzy cheering the crowd over the beginning of the song. If anyone guesses what this song is please tell me because I couldn't recognize it. It definitely sounds familiar, but I couldn't name it. Maybe a Beatles song? [The song is “Day Tripper”!] Anyway, enjoy this great testimony of Black Sabbath in their prime.” CD-R's: INGLEWOOD 1971 |

| 1/13/2006 | EUROPEAN TOUR 2005 | Added review for Oslo 7/7/2005 audience tape: Excellent audience recording of complete show. Running time is approximately 93 minutes. Very clear recording with a fairly well balanced sound mix. Geezer sounds a tad bit louder than Tony at the beginning of the show, but their volumes seem to even out as the show progresses. A fragmentary audience film (filmed by Sabbathlive's Jan Hoel) with footage from the first two songs also exists from this gig, but is not currently circulating. Sabbath's 2nd to last show in Oslo was completely sold out. The band comes out strong with solidly performed renditions of "N.I.B." and "After Forever". Ozzy stays in key throughout both numbers despite his thin and somewhat reedy tone. "War Pigs" finds his voice just slightly off kilter in spots before his voice pitches sharply while introducing “MEE-STER” Bill Ward. His voice problems become more painfully apparent during the often troublesome bridge and outro sections for "Dirty Women". Aside from squeaking out "All right now!" in his brief vocal for "Sweet Leaf", Ozzy is able to complete the rest of the show in a much smoother fashion. Solid renditions of "Into The Void", "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard" also help steer the show back onto a steadier course. By the end of "Children Of The Grave" (with only a few spotty moments from Oz), all is forgiven and Sabbath end the show in good form. |

| 1/12/2006 | DEHUMANIZER Era Tour Dates | Confirmed and clarified show in Iceland. It took place at Akranes Sports Hall in Reykjavik on September 25th, 1992. Special thanks to Les Martin for helping me figure this one out. We did know that Sabbath played this show, but couldn't figure out exactly when for the longest time. Les provided the all important clue of who played with them that night - their old friends, Jethro Tull! According to the tour listing on collecting-tull.com, Tull performed one show at Akranes Sports Hall on 9/25/92. Bingo! Ronnie James Dio: "We definitely played there, it was right after the other European dates. The venue looked like a school gymnasium - which it probably was, since most bands just skip the island and therefore there probably aren't any real concert venues over there. The place was maybe 20-30 kilometres out of Reykjavik. Lots of people turned up at the show, but it was very different audience than what you usually get. There were whole families from small kids to their grandpas. After the show as we talked with the local promoter, we didn't know what to say about the audience, but the promoter was really, really happy about how the show went." | 1/11/2006 | SABOTAGE Live Pictures | Special thanks to Les Martin (ex-Sabbath roadie and technician) for sharing his memories of this night with Sabbathlive. Les Martin: "I was looking at your site the other day. If you go to the photos of Santa Monica Civic / Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, there's a wide shot that shows me sitting stage right next to Geezer's amp stack. I remember it well. The stage manager for the TV show was a girl called Cak Young, which amused Tony, because in England cack means shit. The support was Barry Manilow. It should have been the Hollywood Palladium, but it was not available. So we did it at the Santa Monica Civic instead. I used to operate the snow machines. My cue was was when Ozzy sang the line, "I feel the snow flakes freezin' me". Anyway, Barry was throwing a wobbler because our cross took some time to get out of the grid, since there was a lack of riggers to remove it. By the way, my father built the cross which we kept in a coffin." |

John: "I just came across this Sabbath book [Martin Popoff's upcoming DOOM LET LOOSE] that is supposed to be released in August of 2006 and on the cover is a flyer for a show at Union Catholic High School here in New Jersey! I always heard rumors that they had played there on their first tour of America but never was sure and when I checked your database years ago there was no mention so I kind of wrote it off, but heres proof. Not from their first tour but their second. I don't know if they played the show, but at least it was advertised. And it fits in nicely between Asbury Park and NYC." |

| 11/29/2005 | MOR Era | Venue for Pittsburgh 3/27/72 confirmed. “How strange you need verification of the venue of this show! I hadn't thought about it in years ‘til I was talking concerts at work tonight with some college kids! This was my first concert. I had to lie to my Dad to go. Took a streetcar from the North Side of Pittsburgh to downtown. Walked to the Civic Arena (now Mellon Arena). I sat on the floor (festival seating), which meant literally on the floor - on blankets. Wine bottles and joints were circulating.” “The next summer Pink Floyd did their "Dark Side of the Moon" tour and the Civic Arena opened its roof, which was unheard of for a rock performance. As the smoke filtered toward the Gulf building, all were on their feet exclaiming, "Oh my God, I don't believe it!" Still the best show of my life, though I now prefer smaller club venues! Last big show was Sting and Annie Lennox in Raleigh last September.” “Rumor at the time was it cost 15 K to open that roof! I have no clue the last time the retractors operated. I moved from the Pittsburgh area 5 years ago to eastern North Carolina, but still visit as often as possible. Glad to verify this for you!” ”Have a good weekend!” Jaci Jones, Class of '73, currently a full-time graduate student at East Carolina University! A nd a grandma of almost 4! What a long, strange trip it still is! |
