Russell Saxton: Just to let you know I saw Sabbath play
Aylesbury last night to maybe 800 people in a tiny venue! Got tickets off
Ebay for £50 each, but saw them selling for £75 outside.
It was a great gig. I was surprised by how energetic Ozzy was.
He was pogo-ing up and down throughout the first few songs and even Iommi moved around a bit.
Tony's still playing his John Birch SG with no paint for some numbers and also a new looking black Gibson one.
Lovely atmosphere too - little or no barging, although the mosh pit on the front few rows was mental and
I had a few beer baths as full pints took to the air regularly.
Great venue, clean and modern but in a typical English town with 17th century buildings all around, quite a contrast to
Sabbath's music.
I was most surprised that they played "After Forever". I've never known this to be done live and I love this
song. We in Sack Sabbath do it but I didn't think the real thing did.
[Editors note - I guess you didn't see them in '99 then? And yes,
they also played it back in '71 during the U.K. tours.]
We all wondered if Ozzy actually played harmonica on "The Wizard".
It looked like it, but could have been a sample. Who knew?
Wish they'd played full versions of "Symptom" and "Sabbath
Bloody Sabbath" but you cant have everything. And as there was no support band, Sabbath did 90 minutes which is longer than they will do at
Download (Festival).
Absolutely awesome. They were in top form and like a band of twenty-something's.
I'm not going to Download Festival, but I don't care. Sabbath wont top this show no matter how hard they try!

Michael Liddle: Aylesbury was amazing. The tiniest room ever at the
Civic Centre in a tiny little village, right in the middle of the English countryside.
Ozzy lives about 10 miles or so from the gig, so it was very local for him.
Best of all was that they played "Sleeping Village" as an encore...yes
that's right!! They also did "Dirty Women", "The
Wizard", and "After Forever" The sound was amazing and Ozzy has never sounded
better. He looked totally focused. Bill looked a lot thinner than I've seem him for years and the guys really looked liked they enjoyed the show.
Even Sharon got an ovation at the end as she had come out front with Jack and
Aimee, plus one guy from Velvet Revolver. Even my girlfriend who is not a Sabbath fan loved the
show. She thought they were great.
On the way home we drove to the Hellfire Caves and the Watermill at
Mapledurham. The watermill looks exactly as it was when the pic for the BS album was
taken. I tried to get a pic from the same angle. The watermill is well off the beaten track and took a while to find, but
it's well worth it. Right - it's taken me 5 hours to get home and I'm back at work
tomorrow. Aaaggh!! So, I'm off for a rest. Catch you later.
Ozzy's
gig did not cause power cut (from Bucks Free Press - 6/20/05)
